Everything A Tow Operator
Is On The Hook For

Six coverages, one policy, one agent who knows the difference between on-hook and garagekeepers.

Commercial Auto Liability

Bodily injury and property damage you cause while driving. The DMV Motor Carrier Permit requires $750,000; motor clubs and CHP rotation contracts usually want $1,000,000.

On-Hook Coverage

The customer's vehicle while it's on your hook or your bed. Fire, theft, collision — if it's damaged in tow, this pays. Typically $50,000 to $150,000 per truck.

Garagekeepers Liability

Vehicles stored on your lot or in your yard. Theft, vandalism, fire, storm. Required for impound and storage operations, and the one most yards underinsure.

Physical Damage

Collision and comprehensive on the tow truck itself. Lenders require it; a rotator is a $300,000 machine.

General Liability

Injuries and damage that happen off the road — a customer hurt at the hookup, damage at a job site, slip-and-fall at the yard office.

Workers' Compensation

Required by California for any employee, including your drivers. We write it alongside the auto so the certificates all match.

What The State Wants
Before You Tow

Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) + CA numberEvery for-hire tow truck needs a CA number from the CHP and a Motor Carrier Permit from the DMV. The permit is not issued until your insurer files proof of liability — we file it.
MC-65 M certificate on file with DMVThe insurance certificate the DMV requires, filed electronically by the carrier. If it lapses, the permit is suspended and the truck cannot operate.
CHP rotation programClass A $750,000, Classes B–D $1,000,000, plus on-hook and garagekeepers minimums, a compliant storage lot and background checks. We match the certificate to the CHP area office requirements.
Motor clubs and roadside contractsAAA, dealer programs and roadside-assistance networks each publish their own certificate requirements. Send us the contract; we write to it.
